Barcode Slot Readers:

Barcode slot readers resemble credit card readers except they read barcodes. Barcode
slot readers have a small groove in the top by which the card is swiped and they
are connected to a computer. Barcode slot readers are mostly used for access
ID cards, time clocks, and work like a regular barcode reader.

An optical laser located in the slot reads the information on the barcode, this
information is then sent to the decoder, where it is translated into information
the computer recognizes. The information represented on the card may include a
name or security status.

It is with security that the value of the barcode system is most obvious. In this
day and age of high security alerts, more and more companies are tightening security.
Encoded on the back of security cards and be clearance information, names, and access
codes. Every day applications that are more useful are being discovered for barcodes.
