Barcode Scanning Systems: Barcode scanners are complex peripherals. Several components make up the scanner, light source, a lens, photo conductor, as well as a decoder. To understand the barcode scanning system, first we must understand the barcode. The barcode consist of bars of varying width, which represent numbers. These numbers represent prices, locations, shipping or receiving status, even package contents. The laser of the scanner reads the image on the barcode by reflecting off its surface. This image is sent to the decoder where it is translated into the binary language computers understand. Once decoded, the computer recognizes the information on the barcode. The proper software allows items to be tracked, receipts tallied, prices recorded. What use to take hours, now can be accomplished in a few minutes, with a simple swipe of a barcode.
