Barcode Readers:
A barcode reader or scanner is the name given to a computer peripheral
that reads
barcodes printed on various surfaces. The flatbed scanner has a
light source, lens,
and a photo conductor that translates optical impulses into electrical
impulses.
In addition, barcode readers also have decoder circuitry, which analyzes
the barcode's
data then sends the information to the scanner's output port.
The barcode is a stripe containing little black bars of varying widths,
which contain
information about the product. Barcode readers are complex device
that interprets,
and decodes the information then convert that information into either
ASCII or EBCDIC
digital character code. The most common barcode readers today are
the visible laser
diode or VLD scanner. This scanner sends out 50 or more laser
beams at the same
time in order to read the barcode at any angle.
The decoder transforms the pattern it sees on the barcode into data the
computer
understands. The information stored in on a barcode can be the
price of the product,
inventory, and or tracking information, as well as expiration dates.
