The electronic price checkers have been haled as a modern conveniences both employees
and consumers. Through price checkers, stores employees can perform inventory tracking
easily. The customers wait in line has been reduced by price checkers.

There was a time when an item made its way to the cashier without a price tag, meant
the cashier had to call for a price check. Another employee has to retrieve the
item from the cashier, and then locate a similar item with a price tag. This could
take anywhere from a second, to several minutes, leaving everyone unhappy.

Price checkers used to be stickers placed on items to be purchased, which were torn
off easily, creating long lines at the cash register. Dishonest customers also
found it easy to switch the price stickers, meaning they paid less for items. This
caused loss for the store and added to inflation.

Today, the majority of price checkers use barcodes. These barcodes contain a large
quantity of information. They can be used by the retailer to track inventory, and
as an alert when stock is low. Using the barcode as a monitoring system, the store
can reorder items, which are selling quickly, and not re-order those items, which
do not sell.
