The information that is on a barcode needs to be read by a barcode scanner, which can be either hand-held or stationary.

They use a port to connect to a computer. Scanners simply capture the information that is coded in the barcode, either letters or numbers, and transfer that information to the computer. The computer software processes the information. The two components of a barcode scanner are the reader and the decoder. The reader is able is “read” the information on the barcode by passing light over it and measuring how much light is returned. The light energy that is returned is converted to electrical energy by the scanner and data by the computer software.

There are several different types of barcode scanners.

Some popular choices include hand-held, hands-free, wearable, laser, and digital. The easiest type of barcode scanners to use is probably the pen-wand scanner. In order to read the barcode they need to be held at the correct angle and kept in constant contact with the barcode. In order to read the barcode the pen-wand scanner must be moved over the barcode. The barcode scanners you are used to seeing at grocery stores and hospitals are known as general purpose barcode scanners and are also commonly used to process identification documents. In harsh conditions you will want to use a rugged barcode scanner.

Two ways that barcode scanners work can be seen in image scanners and laser scanners. Image scanners are equipped with a camera reader, which captures a picture of the barcode which is then decoded by advanced image techniques. A barcode as far as ten inches away can be read by an image scanner. Laser scanners can commonly read a barcode that is as much as 24 inches away and read it from just about any angle. Some of the most recently produced laser scanners can even work at distances as great as 30 inches.
